A NUANS Report (“Newly Upgraded Automated Name Search”) is a search of a national database that compares your proposed business or corporate name to existing registered corporate names, business names, and trademarks.

  • If you are incorporating a company in Ontario, a NUANS report is required.

  • It helps ensure that your proposed corporate name is not confusingly similar to existing names or trademarks.

  • It “reserves” your name in NUANS for 90 days, giving you time to complete the incorporation process.

Yes. You can do a preliminary search (sometimes called a “pre‑search”) to check for potential conflicts before ordering the full NUANS Report.

The NUANS report (or the name reservation associated with it) is valid for 90 days from the date the report was completed.

  • Review the list carefully for any identical or confusingly similar names.

  • If there are conflicts, you may choose a different name and run another NUANS Report. In some cases, you might seek consent from the existing name holder, but that can be complicated — it’s often simpler to pick a more unique name.

    • Review the report for similar names.

    • If you’re happy with your name, proceed with incorporation (submit your Articles of Incorporation along with the NUANS Report).

    • File with the Ontario Business Registry (or through an intermediary).

    • Keep a copy of your NUANS Report in your corporate records, as you may need it.

No. While the NUANS Report will list similar trademarks, it is not a substitute for a formal trademark search or application.

You cannot necessarily reuse that NUANS Report when incorporating. According to some providers, each NUANS report is unique and tied to its purpose; you may need a new one for incorporation.
